Over the holidays, we all got a nasty cold. It was the runny nose and never ending cough kind of cold. And now that the weather is really cold and really dry, at least one of the boys wakes up coughing at night. A lifesaver lately has been homemade cough syrup.
I’ve seen variations and testimonies of honey based cough syrups all over the place and I have to agree: This stuff works! Amazingly well. I had an awful cough, the kind that makes your abs hurt. Right after taking the syrup, I coughed for a minute or two. After about 5 minutes, no more coughing for at least an hour. When the boys woke up coughing at night, I would give them about a tablespoon. They would settle in about 5 minutes and sleep the rest of the night.
The recipe is really simple: raw onions, raw garlic, raw ginger, lemons (peel included), and honey. I’ve made this with various combinations of the ingredients. The only ones I think you absolutely need for this to work are raw onion and honey. I think it tastes best with lemon and my boys like the ginger flavor. Since everything in the recipe is stuff we eat anyway, I feel very comfortable giving it to all three boys.
Chop everything up into small-ish pieces and place in a jar. I try to make layers with the various ingredients. Then cover with honey and let sit on the counter overnight. After about 12 hours there will be a thin liquid on top, almost like water. That is the syrup you want to take. We all take a spoonful whenever its needed. After the syrup runs out, I fill it up with honey a second time. A half pint jar lasts us about a week when everyone is coughing. I keep it in the refrigerator, but I have read of others keeping it on the counter. I’m not sure how long it is good for, we go through this pretty quickly! I think the longest I’ve had a batch for is about 10 days.
I really hope you don’t get sick this winter. But if you do, this homemade cough syrup is amazing!
